El objetivo central de esta tesis es analizar el impacto del relato gótico en la literatura irlandesa del siglo XIX como herramienta descolonizadora. Para llevar a cabo dicho objetivo, analizamos la narrativa breve de tres autores, James Clarence Mangan, Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu y Bram Stoker, menos conocida y estudiada que el resto de su producción literaria, y cuyas obras abarcan el marco espacio-temporal propuesto. A pesar del vasto material disponible, el análisis crítico del conjunto de relatos producidos en dicho siglo sigue siendo residual y carente de un enfoque que aúne tan extensa producción literaria, dotándola asimismo de un aparato crítico que interprete los posibles significados que dicha producción pudiera tener para la consolidación del espíritu nacional irlandés y de su literatura como expresión de una cultura diferenciada, que se materializaría posteriormente en su independencia del imperio británico a principios del siglo XX. En este sentido, la aplicación del marco teórico postcolonial al conjunto de la obra de los tres autores objeto de estudio proporciona un nuevo enfoque que nos permite analizar y comprender el impacto del relato breve en el sentimiento nacionalista de la Irlanda del siglo XIX.
