This doctoral thesis presents a four-way comparison. It aims to examine how gender is portrayed in Hollywood and British cinema, paying special attention to whether, and if so how, audiovisual translation contributes to exporting gender stereotypes from one culture to another; in this case from the North-American and British cultures to the Spanish and Italian ones. In particular, we will see what the differences coming out of the dubbed versions of the films analysed suggest in terms of how different countries deal with gender issues, and in what way these translations may mould differently the audiences' understanding of these issues.
