Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855), one of the most prolific mathematicians of all time, displayed a talent for mathematics at an early age. Allegedly, when misbehaving in primary school, he was punished by his teacher by having to add the numbers 1 to 100. Gauss was able to compute this sum--5050--in seconds.
