    This paper studies the construction of narratives regarding the death of two working-class poor women according to what has been published in the main newspapers in Rio de Janeiro in the early months of 1896. In a context in which the development of the press was intertwined with the publication of fictional narratives aimed at the female readership interests, the stories of real women were published with a language intended to be, at once, scientific, accessible, and enjoyable. This analysis aims to demonstrate the role played by main social agents and institutions such as the police, the ideas around the development of medicine, and the intellectuals in the building of the young Brazilian Republic, at the same time observing how the poor women took the printed narratives over and became a topic, cutting edges across class, race, and gender, to enlarge the readership of the newspapers

    Este artigo analisa a construção de narrativas referentes às mortes de duas mulheres pobres e trabalhadoras, em jornais de grande circulação, nos primeiros meses de 1896, no Rio de Janeiro. Numa imprensa que se desenvolveu por meio de histórias ficcionais que pretendiam alcançar também o público leitor feminino, narrativas sobre mulheres reais ganhavam o corpo do jornal, com uma linguagem que se pretendia científica e também acessível e agradável aos consumidores. Pretende-se demonstrar a importância de alguns agentes sociais naquela jovem República, como a polícia, a medicina e os intelectuais, mas também o modo como mulheres pobres invadiram os espaços impressos e fizeram de suas experiências motes interessantes para alcançar leitores de diferentes classes, raças e gênero.
