Resumen de Integrating pragmatic competence within an esp university course: an approach based on the speech act of requesting

Ester Usó Juan, Alicia Martínez Flor

  • The present paper deals with pragmatic competence as one of the main components of the models of communicative competence (Bachman 1990; Celce-Murcia, Dörnyei and Thurrell 1995). Teaching the pragmatic ability in instructed settings, and particularly in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom, has recently motivated a lot of research (Rose and Kasper 2001; Bardovi-Harlig and Mahan-Taylor 2003; Martínez-Flor, Usó-Juan and Fernández-Guerra 2003). In an attempt to contribute to this field of research, our objective is to highlight the importance of integrating this competence in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) syllabi at the University setting. In so doing, we propose an approach based on the directive speech act of requesting (Trosborg 1995) that involves both consciousness-raising and communicative practice activities. Such an approach has been specifically designed for the discipline of Tourism in order to widen the scope of teaching pragmatics in particular ESP settings.1. INTRODUCTION
