This article, an excerpt from a doctoral study, discusses a methodological proposal resulting from research with an experimental approach developed under the assumptions of Didacticof Mathematics as aDidactic Engineering and aims to describe some of the contributions of a Didactic Sequence (SD) developed for the teaching of numbers natural. We analyze the contributions, conditions and restrictions for its implementation, aiming at the development of algebraic thinking. This comprised eight didactic moments and the experimentation took place with 111 students from three class of 6th year of Elementary School in a state public school. The problems applied in the three experimentation sessions were elaborated from the preliminary analysis of the textbook, the curricular guidelines and the literature review, in natural, numerical and iconic language with ostensible resources, such as written records, tables, marbles, figures, that could evoke non-ostensive elements, such as algebraic thinking. Didactic Engineering systematized the study and activities of SD, directed our analyzes and allowed for an interesting dialogue between the objectives outlined for the research based on the crossing of analyzes and thedata collected in the experiments. Results showed that thinking algebraically manifests itself mainly in the ability to establish relationships between the data of a problem, meaning them. Thus, SD, Didactic Engineering and the theoretical framework of Didacticof Mathematics proved to be fruitful, based on the results obtained. The systematized activities and their didactic conduct contributed to the promotion of knowledge and the enrichment of algebraic education and thus of mathematical learning, in addition to showing paths for further research.
