This paper deals with one of the basic and fundamental skills of the translation process, namely, the documentary skill, which is developed in the Degree of Translation and Interpretation of the University of Alicante from the first year in the subject “Terminology and documentation applied to translation”. In our paper we reflect on the development of this skill in the translation classroom and show the biggest difficulties that translation and interpreting students (from the German area) have in this regard when they have to solve the different translation problems they face. This reflection is the product of the analysis and assessment of the work done in class by translation students over the years within the framework of the mentioned subject. The results will serve to improve the materials and methodology used in the classroom since the detected problems are deepened. Likewise, the importance of the development of the documentary skill by the student in order to be able to solve the different translation problems that they face throughout their studies and once they enter the world of work is highlighted.
