This paper tries to highlight the need to develop literacy learning through an active and innovative methodology, which bets on an inclusive, attractive and meaningful way. In this sense, the VESS model- Bal-anced Life with Sense and Wisdom-, has as its main backbone the use of thinking to acquire and build more meaningful knowledge. To this end, it relies on different strategies or tools such as thinking routines, habits of mind or the language of thought, which encourage critical, creative, rational and visible thinking and, therefore, improve understanding. Likewise, the strengths of the VESS model are linked to the different models and routes that are currently used in children for learning to read and write, considering those that are more beneficial - phonological route, global or mixed method - and that, from a neuroscientific point of view, are more appropriate for the way we learn. In short, learning to read and write from emotion and critical thinking will make students more creative and become good communicators. All this will facilitate the student’s development in the future as an active citizen in a changing and democratic society.
